{"id":8208,"date":"2009-09-06T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-06T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hinduismtoday.com\/hpi\/2009\/09\/06\/nepal-indian-priests-assaulted\/"},"modified":"2009-09-06T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-09-06T12:00:00","slug":"nepal-indian-priests-assaulted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hinduismtoday.com\/hpi\/2009\/09\/06\/nepal-indian-priests-assaulted\/","title":{"rendered":"Nepal: Indian Priests Assaulted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/news\/world\/south-asia\/Pashupatinath-temple-re-opens-for-general-public\/articleshow\/4978600.cms\">timesofindia.indiatimes.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>NEW DELHI, INDIA, September 6, 2009: Two Indian priests were assaulted by Maoists inside Nepal&#8217;s Pashupatinath temple on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Girish Bhatta and Raghavendra Bhatta, from the Singeri Mutt in Karnataka were reportedly assaulted because they are Indian and are carrying on an 800-year-old tradition opposed by the Maoists: having Indians, and not Nepalese, as the main priests of the temple.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian priests were assaulted by a group of 40-50 Maoists, who stormed the temple on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s Ambassador to Nepal lodged a strong protest with the Home Minister. He demanded and got more security for all the five Indian priests. <\/p>\n<p>The incident forced the temple authorities to temporarily close the shrine for the public for two days.
