ERODE, TAMIL NADU, July 6, 2004: Farmers in Dharapuram are donating vegetables every day for the Annadhanam scheme, which provides free feedings at temples. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister, P.C. Ramasamy, had appealed to the public to donate to the Annadhanam scheme. In Erode district, the scheme was recently introduced in Kadu Anjaneyar Temple, Dharapuram. It is the 11th temple in the district, maintained by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Board, where the annadhanam scheme has been implemented. Farmers bringing their produce to Dharapuram uzhavar shandy announced that they would donate vegetables to the Kadu Anjaneyar Temple.
Accordingly, the temple authorities installed a hundi (donation box) inside the shandy two days back. Farmers and public who visit the shandy have been dropping vegetables into this. As a result, at least five kilograms of vegetables are collected daily from the hundi. This is the first time in the State that such a vegetable hundi is being placed in an uzhavar shandy. The Special Officer, Erode Regulated Market Committee A. Venkatachalam, said that the farmers of Erode and Gobi had donated one lorry load of vegetables each to Bannari Amman, Pariyuramman and Thindal Velayuthaswamy temples for Annadhanam. He said that even now the farmers were willing to donate vegetables for Annadhanam scheme and the temple authorities, after getting permission from the Collector, could approach the farmers.
