CHENNAI, INDIA, November 24, 2006: A unique silk sari, weighing just 800 grams, woven in over 100,000 shades of threads and jointly produced by two cooperative weaving societies was introduced for sale by Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi. The sari is priced at US$894 and contains 500 grams of threads and 300 grams of zari (a type of thread made of fine gold or silver). The officials reported that the sari’s border had the seven wonders of the world woven into it and the pallu portion (loose end of a sari usually draped over a shoulder or diagonally across the front of the torso) depicts the Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple’s four towers with the rays of the sun falling on them.
