NADI, FIJI ISLANDS, February 2, 2007: The tourist town of Nadi in the Fiji Islands will be a hive of activity for the next week as Hindus from all over Fiji and overseas converge at the Sri Siva Subrahmanya Swami Temple for the annual Thaipoosam Thirunaal prayers which began on Thursday January 25. TISI Sangam national president Dor Sami Naidu said the annual event which has been celebrated for the past eighty years is one of the biggest events in the southern hemisphere. According to Mr. Naidu the prayers are held to mark the victory of good over evil and during the two weeks of prayers Hindus from all over Fiji make their annual pilgrimage to the temple to offer prayers to Lord Muruga. “Lord Muruga is worshipped and adored with intense devotion,” Mr. Naidu said. “Muruga is the embodiment of brilliant light, courage, fearlessness and divine power,” said Naidu. He said the TISI Sangam through the support of the public is offering lunch at the temple everyday. The two week long prayers will end on Sunday February 4.
