MALAYSIA, October 19, 2025 (YouTube): When Deepavali arrives in Kampung Chetti, Melaka, it’s a unique celebration that lights up a 500-year-old Peranakan heritage. The Chettis–meaning traders–are a unique Indian Peranakan community descended from Tamil merchants who settled in Melaka centuries ago. Though many no longer speak the Tamil language, they have incorporated Malay and Chinese influences, while preserving their Hindu roots. Though many have moved away, the village is home to more than 50 Chetti families. The Chetti community has also made significant contributions with several temples under their care. The most notable is the Sri Poyatha Moorthi Temple, the oldest functioning Hindu temple in Southeast Asia. The over 240-year-old temple was built by Thavinayagar Chitty, the leader of the Chetti people.
