SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, October 1, 2003: The San Francisco Vegetarian Society (“source” above) is one among many organizations celebrating a “World Vegetarian Day” at the beginning of October, which is also World Vegetarian Month. Their announcement states, “We are celebrating our 4th World Vegetarian Day Festival and 35th Anniversary Celebration at the San Francisco County Fair Building (Hall of Flowers at 9th Avenue & Lincoln Way) in Golden Gate Park on October 4, 2003 (Saturday). We have an estimated 20,000 square feet of space for the event. This annual event is a very well attended celebration in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Last year, we estimated a couple of thousand people in attendance and we anticipate doubling the attendance this year. The overall purpose of the event is to promote the great health, environmental, compassionate and ethical benefits of a plant-based diet. You are cordially invited to join, celebrate and participate in our 4th World Vegetarian Day Festival. It is our goal to introduce more and more people to vegetarianism / veganism and to plant-based products. We intend to make this a fun celebration with exhibits, entertainment, food sampling, well-known national speakers, compassionate fashion shows, cooking demonstrations, silent auctions, raffles, etc.

A vegetarian website here says, “World Vegetarian Day, October 1, has been observed since 1977 bringing together vegetarians from all over the world for a common cause. It brings awareness to the ethical, environmental, health and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. We’re observing growing trends, especially since Foot and Mouth and Mad Cow diseases, with about one million people a year become vegetarians in the US alone, and millions in Europe, Australasia too. Everything that we are doing is making a difference, and every little bit helps. Where you find any group trying to promote this noble cause, please give your support. Contact your local temple or community and find out how you can get involved this year. Some ideas: stalls at stations, flyers on the street, radio programs, special programs at schools, colleges or universities, vegetarian clubs/socieities, invite family and friends to special dinners, programs at our temples, Massive prasadam distribution everywhere possible, etc.”

The Vegetarian Month/Day idea could provide a theme for a Hindu temple in educating its own members and in outreach to the community.
