ORISSA, INDIA, September 27, 2003: Goddess Durga, depicted as wearing jeans and a short top while pointing to products like ladies garments and fashion jewelry, has been the subject of much outrage in Bhubaneswar. Devotees are particularly sensitive at this time of the year when Navaratri celebrations honor the Goddess with ten hands. The article says, “Sanskruti O Sanskruti, a premier cultural outfit of Orissa has condemned such acts of commercial vandalism and called for prompt withdrawal of the hoarding (billboard).” Abdul Qadir Khan, a Muslim member of a citizens forum in the capital city sums it up, “It’s not a question of Hindu God or Muslim God. This kind of portrayal is offensive to our sensibilities. There has to be some decency and sanctity.” In defense, the business house that commissioned the billboard has apologized for hurting anyone’s religious sensibilities.
