CHICAGO, U.S.A., October 5, 2003: Devotees and swamis of the Ramakrishna Order joined priests in chanting Vedic mantras to purify the land where the first Sri Ramakrishna Universal Temple is to be built near Chicago. Various mantras and prayers were chanted for spiritual advancement, high attainment, protection and success. The Vivekananda Vedanta Society, Chicago, is building a center of harmony among all religions as a tribute to the Sri Ramakrishna and his foremost disciple, Swami Vivekananda, whose thunderous presentation in the United States in 1893 was the first major introduction of Hinduism in the U.S. The 15-acre site cost about $1 million, and the Society needs about $3 million more for the first phase of construction. Swami Chidananda asked the devotees to consider the temple construction project a kind of pilgrimage of its own.
