TRIPURA, INDIA, April 02, 2004: A Kumbh Mela in Tripura may sound unbelievable when there are others in Ujjain, Haridwar and Nasik. Yet this Kumbh is an annual pilgrimage thousands take. It attracts about 200,000 devotees on the 7th, 8th and 9th days of Chaitra, the month prior to Poila Boisak, the Bengali new-year in April. It is held in Brahmakunda, about a two-hour journey from Agartala, the capital of Assam. This scenic spot has a beautiful temple of Lord Siva on the banks of the river Brahmakunda. Widening into a deeper and gorgeous flow the river goes on to irrigate a tea garden. No one knows when the Kumbh Mela in Tripura started. It used to be a grand fair patronized by the erstwhile Maharaja of Tripura. Now the State administration arranges the annual fair. The icon of Lord Siva is said to be over 90 years old.
