LONDON, ENGLAND, May 3, 2004: Close on the heels of the “World Dance Day,” there is good news for the Indian classical dance. Bharata natyam and kathak are among the South Asian dances that have been introduced as part of the BA undergraduate dance curriculum at the prestigious London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS). The course is the first of its kind to be offered in Europe, and includes a strand in South Asian dance as a recognized degree with three years of intensive training. The course has been designed in conjunction with the Akademi, (an organization working to promote South Asian dance in UK), and the help of dancers Stella Uppal Subbiah, (bharata natyam) and Gauri Sharma Tripathi, (kathak). LCDS director Veronica Lewis said that the school is delighted to work with the Akademi and the Arts Council of England to produce dancers of the highest possible standard and that this new offering would enable young artists with a South Asian dance background to study at LCDS without sacrificing their techniques. Auditions for admission will start next week.
