PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, July 31, 2004: A $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (a US government federal program) will help pay for a fall tour and performance by Srishti Dances of India. The local dance troupe performs Sept. 26 at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty. “Lavanya: Graceful Expressions of the East” is a collaboration between artistic director Sristhi Dey and Poushali Chatterjee, who lives in Calcutta, India. The show will blend their two distinct styles of Indian dance: Odissi and Manipuri. Dey performs Odissi, an ancient Indian dance derived from temple dancers, called devadasis. Odissi dancers tell stories inspired by literature, art and spiritual practices. Chatterjee is an exponent of Manipuri, a devotional dance whose performers endeavor to create a spiritual experience. She is artistic director of Manipuri Dance Troupe in Calcutta. The two companies will tour the U.S. beginning Sept 10. They will tour India in December.
