MYLAPORE, INDIA, August 5, 2005: Shining gold pillars and door frame (vasakaal) made in five kilograms of 24 carat, 0.999 pure gold is attracting the attention of passers by on the North Mada Street of Mylapore as they cross the NAC Jewellers shop. The door frame and pillars worth US$91,000 are for the Guruvayurappan temple at Guruvayoor, Kerala. These golden structures would be installed at the sanctum sanctorum of the temple on 18 August. A Baharain NRI from Kerala has sponsored the frame and pillars as an offering to Lord Guruvayurappan, said Ananthapadmanabhan, partner, NAC Jewellers to reporters here. Specialized and skilled artisans from Kumbakonam were put to work for 90 days to complete the frame, he added. He also informed that the work was undertaken only after the approval from the Melsanthi (chief priest) of Guruvayoor temple. Specialized workmen from Hyderabad were commissioned to make gold foils out of the coins. Speaking on the other projects undertaken by the firm, he said the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago has placed orders for a gold bead Saligrama mala to be placed on the 108 Saligrams in the temple. It would take two kgs of gold to make the bead and the likely cost would be around $39,000. The jewellers recently exported gold kavachas (shield) for the icons of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vinayaka for a temple at Chicago, he said.
