JOHOR, MALAYSIA, October 26, 2005: DR. Yogishri P. Balakrishnan, 56, who embarked on a mission to teach yoga to school children in Johor (southern most state of peninsular Malaysia) a decade ago, is now busy working on a series of yoga books. Balakrishnan was nicknamed “Ironman” after his feat of having a car driven over his abdomen as he lay on a bed of nails. He says the books are part of his goal of using yoga to help eradicate social ills, especially among Indian youths. So far, he has written Yoga Path – outlining the pre-requisites for yoga practitioners, Yoga Food – the dietary requirements for yoga practitioners, Vinayakar Akarval – the worship of Lord Ganesha and a translation of the “12 Thirumurai” that details the lives of some of the 63 prominent Nayanmars or poet-saints of Tamilnadu in India. Balakrishnan says that his life’s mission to help people overcome their material woes through yoga by the theory behind the system. Balakrishnan currently residing in Singapore conducts yoga classes in Johor schools which are attended by students, parents and teachers. He also holds classes in Singapore. He hopes the Government can arrange for all schools in the country to include yoga as part of their co-curricular activities and calls on temple authorities to conduct yoga classes in the temple premises.
