KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, April 26, 2006: An 82-year-old Hindu priest who lived alone in a thick jungle in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu with wild animals acting as his “guards” will be here next month to meet his devotees. Sri Ramachandra Swamigal who hails from Madurai will celebrate his 83rd birthday on May 1 at the Kalamandapam, Jalan Scott here with his devotees. In a telephone interview with Bernama from Madurai, Swamigal shared his experience living alone with his “Lord” in the Thirupparankundam jungle during his early days. “I was accompanied by wolves and other wild animals during my stay in the jungle where I did my meditation and prayers,” he said. Asked if he did not fear for his safety with the wild animals by his side, Swamigal said, “they were my guards and they protected me.” “The animals protected me from other unfriendly wild beasts,” he said. Asked how did he befriended the wolves, Swamigal said there was no reason for that as the animals would come at night and stay with him before leaving at the crack of dawn. He said it was in the jungle where his guru, Srimath Pamban Swamigal in his astral form “commanded me to build a temple and a school for the hardcore poor.” Swamigal said the jungle where he lived is now a new township called Pamban Nagar where the school and the temple were located. “The township accommodates 5,000 homes with families involved in spinning cotton and weaving cloth,” he said. Swamigal’s works were being supported and funded by Pamban Swamigal followers and well wishers from around the world. Devotees wishing to meet with the Swamigal can contact the Pamban Swamigal Ashram Kuala Lumpur at 03-92811410.
