KERALA, INDIA, August 24, 2007: Onam, the annual harvest festival celebrated mainly in the South Indian state of Kerala and is a moment of joy and celebration begins on Friday. It is the foremost festival among the cultural repertoire of Malayalees, and falls during the month of Chingam (August-September as per the Gregorian calendar, the first month of the Malayalam calendar) and lasts for ten days. Though it is essentially a harvest festival of Malayalees, mythologically it is linked to Malayalee-Hindu tradition. In Kerala this year’s celebrations would begin with a colorful ceremony at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday. Events would be held at 15 venues showcasing traditional art forms, dance, musical functions and dramas. The music events would be held at Poojappura maidan in which top playback singers would take part. The celebrations would conclude on 28th August.
